5th Ward STEAM School - Sustainability and Spatial Justice

4/21/2023

The new 5th Ward STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) School in Evanston, Illinois is being designed with sustainability and spatial justice in mind, incorporating several features that promote these principles.

One way that the new school promotes sustainability is through its energy-efficient design. The building features sustainable design elements that help regulate temperature and reduce energy use.

In terms of spatial justice, the new school is designed to be accessible to all students, regardless of their physical abilities. The building is fully ADA compliant, with features such as wide doorways, ramps, and elevators to ensure that all students can easily move throughout the building. Additionally, the school is located in a historically under-resourced area of the city, which is intended to provide more equitable access to high-quality educational facilities. Students will no longer have to be bused across town to get to their school.

The school's curriculum also promotes sustainability and spatial justice, with a focus on STEAM subjects that are relevant to the local community. The curriculum includes opportunities for students to learn about urban agriculture, renewable energy, and other topics related to sustainability, as well as programs that promote social justice and community engagement.

Overall, Cordogan Clark's new 5th Ward School promotes sustainability and spatial justice through its design, location, and curriculum, and is intended to serve as a model for other educational facilities seeking to incorporate these principles.
