Cordogan, Clark & Associates designed this extensive reconstruction of an existing two-flat residence on Chicago's north side. This project required that the building was gutted and rebuilt to fulfill the owners' desire for a space that is open and has generous natural light.

The service spaces within this residence are clustered together while the main living areas have open floor plans and expansive panoramas. On the top floor, the master and children's bedrooms are arranged along a curved circulation spine. Sculptural wall shapes divide the interior space and modulate light. These wall shapes work within the constraints of a narrow building to maximize light and openness. Low partitions stop below the ceiling to visually and physically enlarge spaces. Changes in the ceiling height and light walls enlarge the living room and create a sense of spaciousness. Generous skylights and windows provide abundant natural light throughout the residence.

The exterior of the residence is clad in reflective silver metal siding that was originally developed for agricultural buildings. This exterior surface softly reflects light and highlights the oversailing eaves of the building. Similar industrial detailing, such as linear unistrut channels that function as shelving supports, are carried through to the interior of the residence. The metal industrial details merge with the interior wood detailing to unify the space and create texture.
