RESIDENTIAL: Affordable Housing
Chicago, Illinois

This proposal by Cordogan, Clark & Associates for affordable housing in Chicago rethinks the current housing situation. It is designed for a new era of affordable living. The proposed row houses, townhouses and apartments establish a sense of place, or "defensible space." The residential environment is subdivided into zones within which residents can easily adopt proprietary attitudes. A sense is formed that these zones, including parkways, sidewalks, and open areas adjacent to the dwelling units, "belong" to the residents.

The organization of individual units relies on the efficient use of space while incorporating programmatic spaces that are typically reserved for upper income residential units. Master bedroom suites, walk-in closets, formal dining rooms, washers, and dryers are included in the individual units.

The exterior walls of the residences are designed to be of modular pre-cast concrete construction. The advantages of this construction include durability; water, fire, and sound resistance; rapid construction, efficiency, and economy.
