The Liberal Arts Building on the campus of Southwestern Illinois College features an energy-efficient design that energizes student performance. It represents a new flexible and adaptable building concept in building design for the College.
The 3-story facility provides a student center, a small auditorium, a 'Success Center' for students who need assistance in mastering skills, a coffee shop, faculty offices, and classrooms that can be converted into a conference center with operable walls.
Built as the only Gold LEED Certified higher education facility in the region, the building features many different sustainable design features such as a water cistern to collect rainwater for landscaping from the conference center balcony. The Sustainability Terrace is a central design feature and complements other energy-efficient elements such as daylighting, stormwater management, and a reflective roof membrane. Designed for a variety of activities, the outdoor deck provides a unique space that serves as a cornerstone for the planned Campus Quadrangle, a location for largescale campus events.
The new heart of the campus is designed to resonate with the sounds of campus life, offering students and visitors a variety of ways to participate.
